The Crestone area, located at the heart of San Luis Valley is a designated spiritual center hosting several world religions and spiritual practices. Historically acknowledged by surrounding indigenous tribes as the “bloodless valley”, a treaty was formed which designates the area as a place of peaceful gatherings and pilgrimage.
The “Fault” here, in exchange of “Vault” from a more familiar idiom, refers to our flaws, as well as a geological fault. In 2017, a comically sad realization surfaced when plastic waste was discovered at the bottom of the Mariana Trech. “Trash found in places never before explored” headlines international news… “Plastic proliferates at the bottom of the Mariana Trench”, National Geographic.
Out of the Fault is a site specific art installation created for the 2022 Crestone Energy Fair. A meditation labyrinth was presented to attendees that had been created using a week’s worth of trash from a local dumpster that was intercepted en route to Saguache Landfill. At the center of the labyrinth, which was installed at Crestone Town Park is an approximately 12” in diameter circular mass of land that had been ceremoniously exchanged with land from the Saguache Landfill. As participants of the fair navigate their way through the labyrinth, they are confronted with a scaled representation of the ammount of waste generated from the local community. We constructed this interactive site specific installation as an invitation for the community to think about our trash production as well as a monument to honor the relationship between the Crestone Community and the sacred landfill.
